New 2022 Volkswagen Taos near Belen NM Will Be Just the Right Size

November 5th, 2020 by

Smaller than the VW Tiguan, but more advanced than the Golf, the 2022 Volkswagen Taos near Belen NM is just the right size contribution to the booming subcompact crossover segment of autos.

In America’s automotive world, cars are being passed over in favor of everyone’s new favorite- the crossover. Volkswagen is a bit late getting their subcompact entry in, but better late than never! As more and more buyers are opting for crossovers/SUVs as the new family vehicle, the need to have more offerings in that class became very apparent to Volkswagen.

According to the company, the 2022 Volkswagen Taos near Belen NM is about 11 inches shorter than the Tiguan, which is considered a compact SUV. This means VW’s newest baby fits right in with rivals like the Subaru Crosstrek, Honda HR-V, Kia Seltos, and Nissan Rogue Sport. Height and width measurements are comparable to these as well.

2022 Volkswagen Taos near Belen NM: SUV vs Crossover

It’s important to remember that even though the terms SUV and crossover are used interchangeably, a crossover is built like a car, with a unibody (all in one piece) frame, whereas a true SUV is built like a truck, with the body attached on top of the frame. The VW Taos is definitely a crossover, because it’s built on the same platform as VW’s passenger cars. This is what helps it provide such a smooth ride.

That being said, the Taos doesn’t just have a car-based platform, it has a car-based motor as well. Powering the 2022 Volkswagen Taos near Belen NM is a 1.5 turbocharged 4-cylinder that puts out 158 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. Basically, it’s an upgraded, bigger version of what’s under the Jetta’s hood, but slightly more powerful and hopefully more efficient, too. Test drivers report The Taos as having the same refined ride and handling as the VW Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport, with a peppy feel off the line.

The new Taos is set to debut on October 13 of this year and will likely go on sale sometime in the summer of 2021. Initially, the cute crossover will only be offered with front-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic, but not long after it’ll be available as an all-wheel-drive with a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. According to VW’s COO, the AWD version mated with the DCT will put more fun in the Taos’ drivability.

While official fuel economy ratings haven’t been set, initial test drives of the prototype have shown anywhere from 28-34 mpg for a combined rating. If the Taos keeps the 34 mpg, it would come out ahead of almost all its competitors. Not bad at all!

The interior of the prototype brings Volkswagen’s tradition of understated and affordable sophistication to the subcompact crossover class. It still includes some hard plastics, but there are higher quality materials inside, including some leather with contrast stitching. The steering wheel and some other areas have soft touch surfaces, which is a step above lots of other interiors in this segment.

Based on the Jetta, its sedan sibling, expect the 2022 Volkswagen Taos near Belen NM to be nicely equipped with similar tech and safety. This includes at least a 6.5-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with the typical safety features.

Until the unveiling, not much more can be said about the Taos. If you lead an active lifestyle, don’t have a large family, and want a crossover with more refinement that many other vehicles in the (probably) low 20s price range, you’ll want to check out the Taos.
